Just like many adults, kids don’t do well with sudden change. It may seem at times like kids have the attention span of a labrador in a tennis ball factory, but because they are very rooted in the emotional “now”, your sense of urgency doesn’t always translate well for them.
To help avoid the stress of the last minute scramble, get in the habit of giving them notice. They may not understand what exactly “leaving in 5 minutes” means, but they will begin to understand that your announcement means it is time to wind down from one activity in order to begin another. And as with any other lesson, consistency is the key to success.
